Outdoor Technical Skills

If you are interested in camping, hiking, or just spending time in the outdoors, there are a variety of skills you need to learn to make for a smooth experience. This course will emphasize the 7 principles of Leave-No-Trace, which is a system of environmental ethics that encourages people to recreate responsibly by minimizing our impact on outdoor areas and to helping to reduce impacts on wildlife, soil, vegetation, water, cultural resources, and other visitors. ​​Other topics covered in this course include: 

  • using a map, compass and smartphone to navigate on the trail
  • creating a time-control plan for a day on the trail
  • how to take care of hygiene needs in the outdoors
  • how to dress for a given environment
  • adjusting, fitting, and packing a backpack for a multiday trip
  • tying various knots and their applications
  • setting up weatherproof tarps to create shelter
  • safely lighting and using a camp stove
  • how to purify water
