On basecamp and campus-based trips you will have access to running water to be able to clean contact lenses.
On backcountry trips water has to be treated with chlorine water purification liquid which is not safe for contact lenses and can potentially cause irritation or damage to your eyes.
Here are a few alternatives:
- Bring a Sufficient Supply of Contact Lens Solution: Carry enough contact lens solution for the duration of your trip. This ensures that you have a sterile and safe solution specifically designed for cleaning and storing contact lenses.
- Use Daily Disposable Lenses: If possible, use daily disposable contact lenses. This way, you can use a fresh pair each day and avoid the need to clean and store lenses overnight.
- Use Sterile Saline Solution: If you cannot carry a large bottle of contact lens solution, consider bringing small, travel-sized bottles of sterile saline solution. These can be used to rinse your lenses if needed.
- Maintain Good Hygiene: Ensure your hands are clean before handling your lenses. Use hand sanitizer or alcohol-based wipes if clean water is not available for washing your hands.
- Glasses as a Backup: Always bring a pair of glasses as a backup in case you encounter any issues with your contact lenses.
By following these suggestions, you can ensure the safety and comfort of your eyes during your backcountry camping trip.
